Clean Energy for the Future

Clean Energy for the Future

Hydrogen is a promising fuel for the future as it produces no harmful emissions. The Hydrogen Strategy for Canada lays out an ambitious framework for actions that will cement hydrogen as a tool to achieve our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 and position Canada as a global industrial leader of clean renewable fuels.

Lakeside is experienced in the hydrogen value chain, our Emerson portfolio, engineering expertise, and turnkey solutions allows us to guarantee you and your facility’s needs are met as you become a successful Hydrogen user.

What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the lightest element on the periodic table makes up most of matter in the universe. It is colourless, odorless, gas at atmospheric conditions and combustible. It doesn’t exist as pure hydrogen gas (H2) on Earth, instead hydrogen is found bonded to other elements to make a wide range of molecule such as water (H2O), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), amino acids, and more.
Hydrogen gas has been used safely in industry for years to help refine petroleum products, produce fertilizer, process foods, and treat metals. Technology advancements have occurred that are allowing hydrogen to become an electrical grid stabilizer and fuel source for society.

Hydrogen gas can be produced and stored to be used as an alternative energy source or fuel for many processes. It can be used to generate electricity or power vehicles with fuel cells, combusted to offset the use of carbon-based fuels, used as an industrial feedstock for many processes, etc.

Hydrogen Opportunities

Electrical Storage and Generation

Hydrogen can support a growing energy demand while reducing the global COfootprint. The push for renewable energy generation has led to a problem that most renewable energy generation such as wind, solar, tidal, and nuclear often generate electricity when there isn’t grid electrical demand. Hydrogen is being recognized as the best option for energy storage. This is done by generating hydrogen during off peak hours when electrical demand is low and storing the hydrogen until there’s a higher demand for electricity than the grid can supply and turning the hydrogen back in electricity using fuel cells. Storage stabilizes variable output of renewables for supply/ demand dependability.

Transportation
Hydrogen is an alternative way of powering vehicles and is potentially the future to convert humanities global reliance on high carbon-based vehicles to sustainable transport. Electric vehicles have limitations with regards to access to rare materials used in fabrication limiting the total number of possible cars and slow charge time limits people’s ability to travel or requires excess vehicles in industry to guarantee there’s always a vehicle on hand. Hydrogen can fuel a vehicle as fast as gasoline and hydrogen vehicles requires less rare materials to be produced. There are also technologies looking to use hydrogen bonded to ammonia to help overcome technology limitations of pure hydrogen gas for transportation use.
Power-to-Gas (P2G) (Combustion)
The term power-to-gas refers to creating hydrogen gas from excess sustainable electrical grid energy, usually using PEM electrolysis technology. The gas is then injected into the natural gas pipeline or consumed at onsite facilities for combustion. The hydrogen can offset natural gas use while reducing companies carbon footprint by reducing the total amount of carbon-based fuels burned.
