R101 - Reliability Programs and Today’s Data Acquisition
Reliability programs are realizing that trained personnel are very valuable.  When you can manage to train them (and retain them) they are too valuable to be walking 10,000 steps a day around site or in some cases driving (for hours) to connect a portable data collector and press a button to capture data.  With today’s technology, many are changing their approach from “Routes for Inspection” to “Routes by Exception”.  This means that the olden days of carrying a portable data collector around and capturing data once a month are gone.  Granted, there is an investment in technology to enable this approach, but it pays off handsomely when you consider that not only do you get data more often (which builds much better trend plots) but the people you’ve invested thousands of dollars in, to learn the art/science of vibration analysis are now available for much higher value functions like focusing on analysis of the machines in alarm.  They also can review completed work orders, complete case studies and cost avoidance reports for failures that they have prevented, both of which are critical to the success of reliability programs.

This presentation will outline the benefits of this approach as well as how the new systems can share information with the people who need it to make informed business decisions regarding plant operations.
