Koch Fertilizer, in Brandon, Manitoba, is one of the world's largest fertilizer producers. At its Nitric Acid Production Plant (NA1), which produces highly corrosive 58 wt% nitric acid, accurate flow measurements are critical for steady-state production and real-time N2O emissions reporting. FLEXIM’s PIOX-S S721 Non-Intrusive Ultrasonic Flow Meter has proven essential in this challenging environment, eliminating corrosion concerns faced by traditional meters. Its reliable flow and concentration measurements ensure compliance and operational efficiency, making it a vital tool for NA1.

Plants within an enterprise often use varied data platforms, especially with a history of acquisitions and legacy systems. In-house solutions, from spreadsheets to scripts, are common but challenging to maintain, and update with technology and cybersecurity standards. To turn data into information, companies require modern data infrastructure from edge to enterprise, essential for decision making. Standardizing data management involves key considerations:

• Modern, cost-efficient solutions
• Efficient migration
• Change management
• Future-proof solutions

This presentation will discuss the migration and standardization to AspenTech InfoPlus21 and AspenOne Process Explorer at ERCO Worldwide, the transition to a unified solution across 8 sites, including considerations and challenges faced.

Upgrading a system from manual to automated processes can be a challenging endeavor, particularly for large-scale operations. This was the case for Nachurs Alpine as they sought to implement an Inventory Measurement system for their tank farm of over 100 vessels. Previously, operators manually checked the inventory levels on each vessel’s site glass during their rounds. The goal of this upgrade was to enhance the accuracy of inventory management while minimizing manual labor. After evaluating various options, Nachurs Alpine realized that a wired solution with C1D1 wiring would be both costly and complex to implement. Instead, they opted for Rosemount’s Wireless Guided Wave Radar, which significantly reduced both installation time and cost, while allowing for phased implementation.

Presenters:

Karman Dadiala | Nachurs Alpine Solutions Inc
Process Engineer | LINKEDIN

Karman Dadiala is in his seventh year at Nachurs Alpine Solutions, having progressed from chemical operator to process engineer including an interim position in 2023 as the plant manager at their Western Canadian facility. He is now focused on growing the capacity at both Canadian plants by addressing bottlenecks, investing in new unit operation technologies, optimizing existing systems with a focus on automation, as well as capital expansion projects. Karman most recently designed and installed a novel way to treat and repurpose site runoff water back into liquid fertilizer with no compromise on their product quality; in fact, the treated water was cleaner than the city's supply.
